Penicuik’s Christmas Market and Switch-On event saw thousands from the town and beyond bring the festive joy. Penicuik First BID pulled out all the stops to make sure the town had a Christmas party to rival any other! Having installed anchors for market stalls in the precinct to ensure the Penicuik Market could operate outdoors all year round, Penicuik First then set about purchasing and installing the Christmas “icicle” lighting on High Street
buildings and trees. The huge range of activities and events (and mercifully clement weather) meant that the market was incredibly well-attended right through the day, running from 10am – 7pm and seeing 2-3,000 people attend. Major attractions included Santa (of course), who granted children’s Christmas wishes from his special Grotto Bus and handed out presents throughout the day, Tam the Donkey, pony rides, primary school choirs, puppet shows, pipe bands and of course the market traders, who offered festive treats and trinkets for the occasion.
Businesses all over the town centre, who offered special activities for kids and grown-ups alike, were met with day-long queues out the door, while cafés, retailers, bars and restaurants reported record sales, particularly those agreeing to open late for the event. Christmas 2017 is set to be even bigger, better and brighter, with more festive lighting to be installed throughout the town centre (not just on the High Street) and an even wider array of activities and events. Huge thanks to Councillors Derek Rosie and Joe Wallace, who contributed significantly to costs involved with the precinct anchors and Christmas lights, to the community groups, schools, pipe bands and many others who
performed, and most of all to the people and the businesses of Penicuik for coming together to create the best atmosphere and the most enjoyable event in Penicuik for many years!
Penicuik First welcomes any comments, particularly from town centre businesses and community groups, about what you thought of the event and how we can let it make an even bigger splash in 2017!
